Meet Rabbi Deborah Zuker
Rabbi Zuker was born and raised in Ottawa. She studied psychology at Queen’s University and spent a year in Israel at Pardes, before moving to New York to complete a Masters in Social Work and a Masters in Jewish Studies from the joint program at Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS). She remained at JTS for Rabbinical School, studying at the Schechter Institute in Jerusalem, and graduating with smicha as well as a Masters in Talmud and Codes in 2011.
Rabbi Zuker’s first pulpit was at Temple Ner Tamid in Massachusetts, where she created engaging family programming and fostered community collaboration. She continued that journey upon returning to Ottawa and joined Kehillat Beth Israel where she became the first female rabbi at the Conservative synagogue. She moved into private practice in 2022 to serve the wider Ottawa community. She felt it was time to provide greater access to a feminist-informed traditional approach to religious leadership, which makes room for a more holistic, sex-positive perspective, and appeals to all kinds of curious seekers in the Ottawa community.
Her own young sons, Joey and Daniel—children with exceptionalities—continue to expand and inspire her appreciation for the diversity of experiences and needs that exist—and too often go unmet—in many communities.
